Kaplan explained that while the studio has full control when patching on the PC, consoles are a different beast entirely - each patch has to comply with both the individual Microsoft and Sony standards, and adding Nintendo into this mix would further complicate a release schedule which Blizzard has now figured out how to stay ahead of. Overwatch patches are currently released simultaneously across all platforms, but adding the third console would bring a lot of complexity to the table for the developers.
Despite this, Kaplan has stated that he’s always very open-minded about what platform Overwatch could release for:
The popular Overwatch director has stated he’s a massive fan of the Nintendo Switch, though it seems like technical limitations will keep what would undoubtedly be one of its most popular third party games at bay for the time being. Nintendo fans made it abundantly clear that they’d love to have Overwatch on the portable console, but the ball is firmly in Blizzard’s court in regards making it happen.
The company would have to invest some serious the time and money to figure out how to bring down the game’s minimum specifications for Switch, which is something that needs to happen if Overwatch is to become playable on Nintendo’s portable console. It’s a big ask, but as Kaplan stated, Blizzard won’t be officially ruling it out.
Do you think Overwatch will eventually find its way over to the Nintendo Switch, Ranters?
Overwatch is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
