The news emerges from a vacancy posting on the Blizzard Careers page that is looking for a software engineer “to contribute to Blizzard’s mobile gaming efforts”. The position suggests the company is looking for a veteran of the mobile games industry, and the vacancy exists within Blizzard’s Incubation department - the strangely sci-fi term the company uses for the group of employees that are developing new projects rather than sequels or expansions to existing content.
While the position could be for either the untitled first-person game that Blizzard is developing or for a possible Diablo title, both of which have been discussed in recent news, it doesn’t seem likely. Current rumors would have gamers believe that the first-person game will be set in the world of Starcraft, which means it will probably be on PC, and the same can be said for a new Diablo. Instead - and this is just speculation - some fans have been guessing that the new mobile title will be related to Overwatch.
That certainly makes the most sense, given the current state of multiplayer games. League of Legends and Dota 2 are massive competition for games like Overwatch, but neither of those titles have expanded meaningfully into mobile play as of yet. Bringing some form of Overwatch to mobile would be a huge boon for Blizzard, and would also create a wider fanbase that could make Blizzard’s Overwatch League a viable competitor to traditional sports in the future.
Of course, all we have now is the confirmation that a mobile title is likely in development and little else. It’s nice to dream of a world where Overwatch is playable on the go, but until Blizzard makes an official announcement - probably either at E3 or Gamescom later this year - all rumors and speculation will have to be taken with a grain of salt.
