The Blood Bowl series started life as a board game, before being turned into a visceral gaming experience in 2009. The series has always showcased an extremely violent sport where the aim is to score touchdowns or annihilate the opposing side. After several delays, and various beta tests, Nacon recently confirmed that Blood Bowl 3 will release on February 23, 2023.

Based on player feedback from the Blood Bowl 3 Beta, when the game releases in February, it will include a wider variety of factions to choose from. Every three months, a new season will bring a new faction into the fray which can be unlocked through the game’s Blood Pass. Over the course of a season, this is a 50-tiered battle pass that sees players progress through various matches, they will receive free rewards that can be used to customize their teams, dice, and balls. Once gamers have reached the top tier in the Blood Pass, then that season’s faction will be unlocked.

Blood Bowl 3 will also offer a paid version of the Blood Pass which works much in the same way as PVP shooters such as Overwatch 2’s seasons. The paid element instantly unlocks the new team and offers additional awards on each level. This may be of concern for some players as BB3 will be a paid game at launch, however, developer Cyanide has stated that the game will release at a lower base cost and the paid pass is for additional cosmetics that will not give any players an unfair advantage.

Elsewhere, Nacon has confirmed that in-game events will be scheduled around each season pass with various tournaments and league systems taking place. Players who participate in the special events will gain a ranking throughout the season that adjusts the matchmaking so that opponents with a similar skillset will keep the action fresh.

It has been a long road for fans to dive back into the Blood Bowl universe as Blood Bowl 3 was initially scheduled to release in August 2021. Still, from the glimpses players have seen such as the Blood Bowl 3 Super Bowl gameplay trailer, fans will be rewarded with a bloody fun spectacle when the game releases next year.

Blood Bowl 3 is scheduled to release on February 23, 2023, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Switch version will be released at a later date.
