Of all FromSoftware’s Soulsborne games, Bloodborne arguably has the vaguest plot. While the Dark Souls games gave gamers something resembling a goal in their intros, the PlayStation 4 exclusive was one that dropped the player in the middle of a gothic horror story and made them figure things out as they go along. Most of Bloodborne’s story is hidden away in its lore that only dedicated diggers will be able to uncover. Some of these secrets involve the game’s final potential antagonist, The Moon Presence.

The Moon Presence is involved in two of Bloodborne’s three endings. Regardless of which of these two endings is triggered or chosen, it will always approach the player in the same way. The Great One descends from the moon before hugging the player, resulting in either a battle between the two or the player’s hunter being bound to The Hunter’s Dream. In a recent post, Reddit user Night_______________ recreated The Moon Presence’s descent from the moon using pixel art as the hunter waits to confront the Great One.
This bit of pixel art is one of many art tributes to Bloodborne that can be found throughout the internet. Last year another artist made a similar piece of animation involving The Moon Presence as the hunter prepared to face it. Another saw the hunter confronting Elden Ring’s infamous boss, Malenia. All of these pieces of art go to show that dedicated Bloodborne fans are still out there, regardless of the developer’s plans for the franchise.
Like many of Bloodborne’s bosses, The Moon Presence’s status in the narrative and link to The Hunter’s Dream is a bit vague, though some things seem to be agreed upon. The Moon Presence in Bloodborne has been called the best kind of secret boss and defeating it arguably leads to the game’s best ending. Since then the various FromSoftware games have attempted to recreate the success of the Moon Presence by introducing similar optional boss fights in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Dark Souls 3, and Elden Ring with mixed success. Regardless, it appears that The Moon Presence has left an impact on gamers, and tributes to the character will continue for some time.
Bloodborne is available now for PS4.
